Fundamentally, formal processes are important because they drive behavior. When an organization publishes a process description, methodology or set of guides they are essentially providing a roadmap of how they want managers and employees to conduct specified operations. Depending on how the processes are written and how they are implemented are the major contributing factors to their effectiveness.

There are however some caveats as to whether processes will achieve their intended results. Processes should not be so rigid that they inhibit pragmatism, creativity or remove reasonable latitude and authority of the Project Manager. Another danger with processes is they can become bureaucratic, thus wasting people’s time and energy.

The PM tec philosophy is that processes should not become an end in themselves. Rather, they should be a means to achieve a result, that being project scope, schedule and cost results. Properly used, processes can be a major contributor to project success.
